Seawalls & Shoreline

Landscaping After a Seawall or Bulkhead Installation

A new seawall or bulkhead can clean up a shoreline, but the construction process usually isn’t gentle on the surrounding yard.

Excavators need room to move. Tiebacks may require digging behind the wall. Backfill, grading, and repeated equipment traffic can disturb grass and compact soil several feet into the property.

Not glamorous, but important.

Drainage Comes Before Landscaping

Charleston Dock Doctors LLC may use sandy, free-draining backfill behind a seawall or bulkhead because the area needs to move water toward its intended discharge path. That material may perform well behind the wall without being the best soil for sod, flowers, or shrubs.

A landscaper may recommend adding an appropriate layer of topsoil before installing sod or seed. However, landscaping shouldn’t cover weep holes, disturb filter fabric or drainage stone, or change the grade so runoff flows toward the wall.

The plants help manage the surface. They don’t replace proper wall drainage.

Ornamental Grasses Are Often a Good Fit

Pink muhly grass is one of our favorite options for Charleston waterfront landscaping. It’s native, handles coastal conditions well, and has a clumping form that looks good without becoming a large woody plant.

Clemson Extension notes that native grasses develop extensive fibrous roots that can help hold soil, build organic matter, and improve water infiltration. Pink muhly is also included among salt-tolerant plants for the South Carolina coast.

Depending on sunlight and moisture, a landscaper may also consider native switchgrass, sedges, or other compact grasses suited to the property.

Give Large Roots Some Distance

Avoid placing large trees, aggressive spreading plants, or substantial woody shrubs immediately beside the wall. Their mature size, root habits, and maintenance needs should be considered before planting.

Before placing anything directly behind the top cap, confirm that it won’t obstruct inspection access or interfere with the drainage plan.

Charleston Dock Doctors LLC provides seawall construction, bulkhead rebuilding, backfill, and drainage-related wall improvements throughout Charleston, Mount Pleasant, James Island, and John’s Island. We’re also happy to coordinate with your landscaper so the finished yard works with the wall—not against it.
